Summerdean Church - Missions & Outreach

This ministry was created by Summerdean and the desire to see the church recognize and respond to the needs of orphans, both domestic and international, understanding that the church is God's plan for the orphan. The ministry was born out of a desire to educate, encourage, and equip the Body of Christ to care for the orphan through adoption, foster care, and global orphan care. In the last few years the ministry has partnered with Roanoke City DSS, encouraged local foster care and adoption staff through acts of kindness, funded various projects and missions for local children, sent supplies to missions around the world, and helped start a training center and primary school in the Democratic Republic of Congo called Emmanuel Training Center.

Camp Bethel

Camp Bethel is the outdoor ministry of the Virlina District Church of the Brethren that exists to foster and build relationships with God, each other, and creation, together. They live the ministry through both summer camps and facilities/event rentals. In addition to our financial support, Summerdean has numerous children and youth who attend summer camp each year and numerous attendees who are summer staff alumni. The church participates in Heritage Day, workdays, and other annual events, as well as sponsors the upkeep of the Health and Retreat Center, one of the most popular rental buildings!

Brethren Disaster Response

Brethren Disaster Ministries engages a network of volunteers to repair or rebuild damaged homes for disaster survivors who cannot recover on their own. Summerdean promotes these disaster response trips frequently and has had attendees on several trips!

CHICKEN BARBECUE

Every fall, Summerdean puts on one of the largest chicken barbecues in the Roanoke area. People come from all over the valley to get a taste of the slow cooked barbecue chicken, baked potatoes, cole slaw, rolls, and numerous choices for dessert. A half chicken meal costs $10. Summerdean makes no profit off of this event, as we give all of the money we make to a mission organization. Come join us for a fun-filled day of fellowship and good eats.

Glenn and Sally Clark

Glenn and Sally have been missionaries through Calvary Commission supported by Summerdean for years! The couple has ministered to individuals all over the world and engaged in ministry both domestically and abroad. Recently, they moved to Florida and have scaled back their ministry; they will still be actively working in Mexico, Peru, Cuba, and in United States prison mininstry.

Community Crossings

This non-profit ministry is located in McDowell, West Virginia and ministers to the children, youth, and parents of McDowell County. The impoverished town is blessed by this program's missional community focus, youth center, and parenting program. Our church has hosted the leaders of this non-profit, gone on mission trips to the center, helped prepare for events from a distance, and supported financially.

Josiah and Bethany Children's Home

The children's home, a program of Calvary Commission located in Reynosa, Mexico, houses 40 children who are orphaned, abandoned, and victim of various traumas. The home works to ensure stability, education, and spiritual guidance are provided for each child.

Lybrook Community Ministries

This ministry is charged with revitalizing the ministry to the Navajo and Dine' native American communities. They have a church, laundromat, community center and other building used to foster community and host workcamps and mission trips each year.

Mountain View Elementary

Summerdean supports this local elementary school through school supply drives, meals for those in need during the holiday season, and acts of kindness toward the staff.

Roanoke Area Ministries

Roanoke Area Ministries is a grassroots, community, interfaith organization that boldly serves as an advocate for people who are homeless and poverty stricken. RAM helps people in need through a variety of programs including emergency financial assistance, a day shelter serving a daily hot noon-time meal, providing clothing and job placement assistance. Our aim is to empower people to move from dependency to self-sufficiency; in doing so, we build a stronger, healthier community.
